Figuring out what kind of situations set off my dysphoria has made a huge difference in my life. Managing it more like a mood or anxiety disorder has worked a lot better for me than treating it as a sign of an inner identity that needs to be expressed.
My dysphoria/internal gender feelings can change a lot and be somewhat confusing and chaotic. Turning these feelings into an identity and then trying to make that identity visible to other people just caused more stress. That approach wasn't satisfying or helpful.
It's better if I think of my "gender identity"-type feelings as private experiences that I only need to tell a few people about and only when I'm actually going to get something from doing so. They're very personal and not everyone needs to know about them.
Watching and keeping track of when I get dysphoric has helped me make more sense of what these feelings mean. So much of my dysphoria is connected to stress but also about relating to different social groups.
Examining my dysphoria can help me understand how I've been affected by past trauma and living in a sexist society. It can help me figure out some of my psychological quirks and get to know myself better.
I wish I had learned how to decipher my dysphoric feelings years ago. Now that I have the tools it's not hard to do and it's made dealing with my dysphoria a lot easier.
