Okay I know it’s late but I’m going to tell you about the hellbeast.
As you know, a lot of mushers pass through @AlpineCreekLdg. So we hear a lot of musher gossip around the dinner table. And a few weeks ago, the conversation centered around one dog in particular.
The dog belonged to Dallas Seavey. He and some other folks were talking about a mysterious 2-year-old female who gave everybody trouble.
tbh were calling her “the hellbitch” but since I prefer to use bitch in a purely positive way I modified it to hellbeast here
Anyway, nobody knew what to do with the hellbitch. She was cranky! She was scrawny! She hated all men!
Like honestly she was an amazing athlete and Dallas was lamenting the fact that he couldn’t run her with his team because she was too weird. Her brothers were totally friendly, and they were all raised together, so it wasn’t an issue from her puppyhood. She was just a hellbitch.
Q and I sort of leaned in. “So,” he said all casual-like. “Where is she now?”
We looked at each other. We didn’t say a word, but we both understood.

We wanted the hellbitch.
So last week, when I went out to get the trail mail, I made a special extra trip to Talkeetna, about 2.5 hours south of Cantwell.
I drove down a long snow-covered road. I followed the scribbled map that Dallas had made me. Pulled through a yellow gate and came to a nice dog yard. The dogs were resting on their houses. One of them, a cheerful elder who seemed to be the chaperone, had three legs.
I do not know what I expected the hellbitch to look like. Maybe fierce, in some way?
Her real name is Hellion.
She is smol. She is gentle.
Here is what I can tell you so far about Hellion:

1. She’s very nervous about being touched. Like Kenai, she’ll need patience and time.

2. She HATES having her feet touched.

3. She eats a lot but is very skinny.

4. She basically only thinks about running.
5. She likes hanging out with the puppies.

6. She has diarrhea and gave the puppies diarrhea.

7. She‘s noisy when she wants to run and also encourages the puppies to be noisy.
8. She hasn’t trained much this season so we wanted to have her run 10 miles with the team and then ride in the sled the rest of the way but when we tried to put her in the sled she exploded out so we let her keep running and thought she’d get tired but she never got tired.
9. Therefore she will join the rest of our dogs in training for my Iditarod team.
10. Also we forced her to rest yesterday by riding in the barkbox (Boudica and Jeff also rode a little bit of the way) and this is the face she made the whole time.
Welcome, Hellion! We can’t wait to get to know you better. The end.
P.S. also her nickname is Helly
