Let’s delve into this “I’m not antisemitic, I’m anti Israel” response that I keep getting to my tweets about antisemitism. There are very few Jews who get upset when you criticise the Israeli government or the actions of the state of Israel. Here is where the line is crossed:
Some people criticise Israel using age-old antisemitic tropes, ideas, cartoons etc. My general rule is if you replaced the word “Israel” or “Zionist” with “Jew”, would it be antisemitic? Eg “the Zionists control the world.” This is one way it slips into antisemitism.
Blaming Jews for the actions of the state of Israel & using this as an excuse to deny us solidarity against racism (including the type from my previous tweet) is racist. A v crude metaphor (I’m not calling Israel Isis) but it’s like justifying Islamophobia by saying “but Isis.”
This includes things like graffitiing Jewish sites which have nothing to do with Israel with pro-Palestine slogans, yelling things like “free Palestine” at random Jewish people, responding to threads about antisemitism by saying “well your people are doing XYZ”. Collective blame.
No matter what you think of Israel in its current incarnation, its location, its foundation & its policies - there is one fundamental principle here where it’s odd that people don’t see how they’re being racist. All people deserve self-determination except the Jews?
Imagine a minority has been systematically expelled, persecuted, attacked (pogroms) & then exterminated in every country in which they’ve been a diaspora. On what grounds can you then be against the idea of them self-governing, given the world let them down?
So let’s forget Israel for one second - if you are against the fundamental *idea* of a Jewish nation state, of a safe haven for Jews, if you think all people (including Palestinians) have the right to self determination, but not Jews, not even the concept, question why that is.
It’s not hard to criticise the actions of the Israel government without being antisemitic. It’s not hard to fight for Palestinian self-determination without being antisemitic. But if you don’t educate yourself about where the line is, you do more damage by speaking.
It’s completely unfair on ordinary Palestinians, already persecuted by the Israeli government and their own governments, that a movement offering them solidarity is associated with racism. You are claiming to speak for them. They deserve better as much as Jewish people do.
While we’re here: accusing Jews who are terrified of rising LW antisemitism of just defending Israel, or being in the pay of the Israeli government or just trying to protect their money from socialist Corbyn - all antisemitic. I am none of the above but it’s used to shout me down
Well this thread is proving a useful draw to flush out perfect examples of antisemitism (very poorly) masquerading as activism. I’ll post some here as illustrative examples of how to recognise it. This one is easy, he didn’t even bother not to say Jew.
Just to be clear - I am absolutely not interested in discussing anything to do with Israel beyond the *idea* of Jewish self-determination. I will mute anyone who turns this into a debate about Israel / Palestine. This is a thread about where it crosses into antisemitism.
Looooool. This has to be a bot because no human would make such a brazen & weird assertion & forget that Hebrew is a Semitic language. Also, we can’t spell or read in general or just in Arabic? Maybe the former would explain why this tweet makes zero sense to me.
Here we go. Now, little critical thinking exercise: what’s wrong with what has been said below in response to the above?
It’s a real shame he was so incensed by the idea of opening his mind a little that he didn’t read the rest of the thread, which illustrates what the majority of Jews are *actually* upset about when people accuse them of trying to stifle criticism of Israel.
I mean, in context, in reply to *that* particular tweet where I was basically saying it’s racist to use “Zionist” as a code word for “Jew”, yeah, it is...
