1/ I am still processing this, but here's a story I need to tell.

This is Jasson. I met him in the caravan's camp in Tijuana 11 days ago.

His body was just found along with another teen asylum seeker.

We don't know who did it, but I know who is responsible. It's a hard truth.
2/ If Mexico and the US were following international law and treaty, Jasson would have been able to walk up to this crossing and legally apply for protection. Instead, he was (illegally) relegated to months of waiting on "la lista" in one of the world's most dangerous places.
3/ CBP's official position is that anyone can walk up & apply for asylum. But they know full well that armed Mexican authorities will turn anyone who looks like they may be trying to do that back well before they make it to the US side of the bridge. This is, of course, illegal
4/ I left Tijuana furious at the list and everyone responsible. As @Ocasio2018 has said, if we actually wanted to address the real issues we could have sent thousands of asylum officers to clear the backlog rather than thousands of American soldiers.

5/ Imagine what it would take for you to leave your loving family alone at the age of 17 to make a difficult journey for 1000s of miles. Nothing short of a real threat of death.

Jasson would not have lived to his 18th birthday in Honduras. But he didn't have to die in Tijuana.
6/ A special note for the "get in line" crowd:

The "line" at Chaparral for asylum seekers is the only "line" nearly all of the caravan ever legally had a chance to stand in. 30-40 people each day, & a backlog of 5000+. I met so many willing to wait it out, as long as it took.
7/ Asylum seekers travel in caravans for their own safety. Moving in huge groups obviates extortion or violence from traffickers, threats from gangs, and vulnerability of kids, the elderly, LGBTQ asylum seekers, and those with disabilities. People look out for each other.
8/ Jasson was happy to get to a shelter with his own bed, healthy food, and new friends his age. He reunited when we got there with a shy girl he'd met along the way who cried happy tears and hugged him. I knew then he was going to make it.
9/ But he didn't.

We failed him. We politicized his life along with thousands of others. Called them criminals, invaders, and terrorists.

This is what happens when we close our borders, our ears, and our hearts.

A la chingada la lista.
A la chingada las fronteras letales.
UPDATE: Arrests have been made.

10/ UPDATE (12/19): We received this sad news the day before this announcement, but it only underscores how badly the let-them-wait-in-Mexico approach fails the people it claims to be helping
