THREAD: Some serious thoughts about the situation in Gatwick. You’re going to have to bear with me, but this is a big lesson from this incident:

We are lucky.
For some time I’ve considered the most damaging kind of attack from armed drones would be to to mirror the techniques used by the Washington Sniper in 2002.

Use a drone to drop a small explosive at the O2 arena after a show. Dump the drone on a random roof...
Repeat the process 3 days later in Wembley Stadium.

4 days after that, hit Liecester Square.

London would come to a standstill, civilians would be afraid to visit open public areas, just as we saw in Mosul. The explosions wouldn’t even need to be large to have this effect.
Civil authorities would have been absolutely powerless to prevent it, as the incident in Gatwick is making very, very clear. The UK has essentially lost control of a very important piece of infrastructure for almost 24hrs.
I think the chance of this kind of attack is actually small: renting a van and buying some knives is a lot easier.

However, the effect it would have would be out of proportion to the casualties - it would demonstrate the inability for the civil powers to protect the population.
So, we’re lucky this attack seems to have been carried out by a group whose intent appears to be disruption rather than destruction.

After Syria, the attempt on Maduro’s life and Gatwick, the potential for use of drones by malicious actors is patently clear. END
It’s also worth noting that #gatwick_airport now appears to have had more downtime as a result of this incident than Heathrow when it was attacked 3 separate times by mortar bombs fired by the IRA in 1994.
