Humans, we know you do not see as well as we do at night. You cannot pull all the ghostlight into your eyes, opening your own points of darkness to catch the faintest hint of movement. So we understand why this night, of all nights, would weigh heavy on you.
We know you tell yourselves stories to soften the dark and you light fires to round its edges, fill its core.

But we are here. We have been here for a very long time. We have chosen you for the warm places you build, both of stone and skin. There is nothing to fear on this night
Darkness is not absence, humans, but fullness. There is nothing hollow about the night. It is wild and breathing, soft as our fur and sharp as our claws, made of teeth and heart, throbbing blood and humming song. Tonight is the longest night of the year and thus the fullest
It is winter, when frost spreads its whiskers across the dead leaves and ice clings to the desperate teeth of the trees but it is holy, this night. It is our most sacred time, when we celebrate the wonder and terror and sweetness and pain of darkness
Our gods have no names. Our stories are built of ear-flicks, slow blinks, quick movements of tails & paws. Our prayers are harsh and bloody, our hymns are wild with shrieking joy. We invite you humans, as we do every year, to celebrate this night with us & leave your fear behind
Step outside tonight. You have no fur so pull warmth around you with the skins you sew. Look at the way your breath frosts into nebulous clouds. Try and imagine stories without words. Reach up to where the stars blink their kitten-bright eyes and cup darkness in your hands
Feel how full it is, the dark. The history it carries, the ghosts it frees, the songs it sings. The dark is where the wild in you lives, the most sacred core of your being, before you named your gods and constrained your songs to their words
We love you, humans. We choose you over and over again despite your reliance on words, your fear of the dark. We want you to grow brave in our presence, learn our magic once and for all. We want this night to become holy for you as well
Winter begins in darkness but it is a season of moving toward light.

We feel it bloom in our marrow, the sweet dark and the light it promises. It is our home in the cold, a fire we need no flame to ignite
But if you are not yet ready for our wordless divinity then we will be here for you still, humans. We will lend you the warmth of our fur and the sharpness of our claws, the healing wreathe of our purring, the wordless whispers of our love. We will lead you through this night
And we will sing you our hymns, even if you do not yet understand them
