#Sarıkamış is trending in France. It's the anniversary the worst military defeat in Ottoman history. The vast majority of the dead--between 60 and 80,000--froze to death or died of typhus. The Ottoman Third Army started with 118,000 men, ended with 12,500.
Enver Paşa blamed the defeat on the Armenians. And indeed, Armenian volunteer units made up of Russian subjects fought on the Russian side. But the defeat was owed to bad generalship and harsh weather.
I'm not sure why the hashtag is trending in France. Perhaps it reflects an organized effort of some kind, in response to Kurdish pleas for French protection in light of the US withdrawal.
Or perhaps the French people are spontaneously joining Turks, Russians, and Armenians in memory and mourning.
