It’s something that the BBC at least runs fact checking stories like these, but let’s take a look at some of the editorial choices here (short thread): bbc.com/news/business-…
“Could”?! Brexit *will* lead to new trade barriers in *all* scenarios, this is axiomatic. The article falsely implies that a negotiated future agreement could give more market access than the UK has at present - this is quite simply impossible.
Is the “because” here attributed to those making this (false and unchallenged) suggestion? Or it simply taken as read that this is how the EU really works? It’s an old eurosceptic myth that France and Germany run the EU behind the scenes. They do not.
Can you find any such categoric assertion in the article about the economic harm that the UK “would undoubtedly face”? Throughout the article seems shy of owning its own argument based though it is on hard facts and clear logic.
The bottom line is that the UK has been dishonest with itself from the start over its relative strength and bargaining power and this has led to abject failure in negotiations with the EU. Two key rules of negotiation: know yourself; know the other side. ottocr.at/brexit-negotia…
