A week ago, Mary and Joesph set out from Nazareth to Bethlehem, walking at least 90 miles along the Jordan River and through the hills of Jerusalem. Because Mary was nine months pregnant, they only walked 10 miles per day. During the day, it poured. At night, it was freezing.
The couple likely had to fend off wild boars, and bears and lions lived in the woods. Bandits, pirates and robbers were also common hazards along their route. Once they finally got to Bethlehem, overcrowding forced them to take shelter in an inn, where it was noisy and dirty.
Every day, families seek ways to survive in their homeland or become refugees searching for safety. Because there are still countries and systems of domination that destroy families through fear, prejudice and violence, thousands are forced to travel like Mary and Joseph.
Mary and Joseph were in a desperate situation, just like the refugees who suffer and sacrifice to seek asylum in America. On Christmas Eve, we should honor the journeys of migrants and refugees rather than celebrate barriers and persecution.
