Going to the border w a group of progressive #veterans & @Ocasio2018 NY14 organizers to respond to the #asylum crisis one of the most important actions this year. It reminded me of our collective power & #military veterans & families' unique strengths & instincts as organizers /1
Coming together quickly for urgent collective action, we realized most of us had a #military affiliation, whether we enlisted ourselves or our mother, uncles, or cousins served in uniform.

Nearly all of us were also #immigrant-connected— immigrants or the children of immigrants
Many #progressive military #veterans are wired w critical, transferable skills that make us incredibly effective organizers. Particularly in high pressure, chaotic situations

*Vets of color in particular hold massively under-tapped insights & analytical power for change* /3
Us #veterans reflected how this trip to the border felt deeply reminiscent of a deployment.

Children we met while deployed in uniform, looking similar to the children we met in Tijuana.

Being thrown into barely-stood-up ops HQs, yet feeling lucid & focused amidst the chaos.
To me #organizing is forever inherent in my life because it binds us together in human connection (past, present & future) & powerful, abundant hope.

It pushes us to answer our WHY

Helps us tangibly see what we’re fighting against

Makes us feel what we can achieve together
This Xmas I reflect on our collective power. I pain for the families forcibly stuck in increased danger & strife. I mourn our country’s downward-spiraling moral legitimacy. I hurt for babies & children who need protection, not desolation & death #JusticeForJakelin
We were honored to serve w @AlOtroLado_Org in Tijuana. This Xmas @commondefense is fulfilling our work & following through on our recommendations. We’ve donated items for better infrastructure to make the op on the ground more effective & sustainable

There’s a still a great need & many vital battles ahead. #Veterans & #military families in particular have an incredibly important role to play bridging across our social movements & in this dire political moment.
