everyone that has worked in the private sector knows this is a stupid meme
not only is the private sector filled with non-essential personnel, the private sector is filled with non-essential industries.
99% of programmers
99% of autoworkers
99% of writers
99% of whatever

can take the entire first quarter of 2019 off and nobody would notice
If the Darwinism of the private sector leads to truly 'essential' roles then layoffs would be an incredibly difficult task and an existential crisis for any company. But they never turn out that way
Essential work:
> feeding people
> teaching people
> moving shit
> creating energy
> shooting bad guys

Public sector employees seem to be slacking because their jobs have more of a specific mission. Private sector employees are incentivized to create bogus needs for bogus products and services to create roles for themselves.
The reality in corporations:

- hiring is hard
- you always have too few or too many people from one project to the next
- middle managers are empire builders within any project they are in
- senior leadership has little idea what the project is going to look like in 12 months
The stupid bullshit that happens with hiring quotas (the numbers allotted to projects alone, not even getting into the other dramas) in large companies rivals all the nonsense that happens in governments
"we need the private sector, the private sector pays taxes"

nah it's all funny money that travels in a circle, the government is the biggest consumer for many private companies, the economy is an inderdependent mess, you can't just obliterate one piece
