Noticeable about Warsaw is that there's no shortage of big name commerce. Huge Microsoft base here. This is by no means the poor country it once was. This is a thriving city.
Notably though, Warsaw's growth is as much to do with the global urban agglomeration trend with other formerly large cities now having a negative birth rate. Lodz was never fully rebuilt after its Jewish population was killed off. The modern story is one of decline.
It is said that a lot of corporates have set up headquarters in Warsaw to tap the unused intellectual capital. Even a recovering former Soviet state manages to have better schools than the UK. But then even Ghanaian mud hut schools achieve better literacy rates than the UK.
There is a sense here that there's a hunger for the prosperity we have taken for granted which would account for the apparent dynamism. I have long felt that the UK's decline is symptomatic of a deep rooted social malaise. Had it too good for too long.
