LinkedIn co-founder Billionaire Reid Hoffman has acknowledged that he partially funded a group that used disinformation tactics in Alabama’s 2017 special election in an effort to sink Republican candidate Roy Moore. - The Verge apple.news/AbK0l2dDIT5azk…
Last week, Facebook suspended five accounts linked to the operation for “engaging in coordinated inauthentic behavior.” One of those accounts belonged to Jonathon Morgan, CEO of cybersecurity company New Knowledge. apple.news/AfATBT4U8RKqcv…
The group Hoffman backed financially, American Engagement Technologies, created misleading Facebook pages, urged Republicans in Alabama to support a write-in candidate instead of Roy Moore, and “created false evidence that bots were backing Moore on Twitter.”
The effort was collectively known as #ProjectBirmingham.

Schmidt sent a memo to Cheryl Mills outlining his ideas for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. wikileaks.org/podesta-emails… #PodestaEmails
And he [Schmidt] saw the need to push for the integration of various datasets—voter files, social media profiles, cable box records—all into one system.
One of the firms Schmidt donated heavily to is The Groundwork, which turned into the Clinton campaign’s top technology vendor, earning more than $600,000+ in fees since the campaign began, according to federal campaign finance disclosures. thegroundwork.com
For the record: 😂
The Groundwork was formed as a Delaware LLC w/Schmidt’s backing in 2014. As Schmidt advised, its offices were in Brooklyn, blocks from the building that would eventually house Clinton’s campaign HQ. The company’s leader Michael Slaby, had been one of Obama’s top staffers in ‘12.
C’mon bro! Slaby hired engineers from Netflix and Google to build the back-end infrastructure for signing up supporters and collecting donations, with plans to market the platform to corporate clients through the Groundwork’s parent company, Timshel, also backed by Schmidt.😑😑😑
Schmidt met with Clinton herself to discuss the effort, leading her to request updates on her website by e-mailing her team to ask about Facebook’s decision to open-source artificial intelligence technology. wikileaks.org/podesta-emails…
Schmidt also requested a meeting w/Bill Clinton in February 2015. “[I]t is about the business [Schmidt] proposes to do with the campaign,” Tina Flournoy, Bill Clinton’s chief of staff, wrote. “Yup,” Podesta replies. “I’ve talked to him too.” wikileaks.org/podesta-emails…
The Groundwork, then a ten-person team, developed a sign-up page and donation tool to be deployed by the campaign when it launched. Campaign staff were eager to have control over their own core technology. wikileaks.org/podesta-emails…
The cost of Project Birmingham totaled $100,000 — the identical amount Facebook says the Russian Internet Research Agency spent trolling people on social media leading up to the 2016 presidential election.

Omitted in the NYTimes report on #ProjectBirmingham: One of its authors learned about it when he spoke at an off-the-record meeting organized by the same group who ran the operation.
A copy of a confidential report raises new questions about whether the project was — as the Times said — an “experiment,” or whether it was a straightforward Democratic attempt to interfere in the election.

Scott Shane, a Times national security reporter, was one of a handful of speakers at a meeting held in Washington in early September by American Engagement Technologies. twitter.com/ScottShaneNYT
During the meeting, Dickerson and Sara Hudson, a former Justice Department employee who now works for a company partly funded by Hoffman, detailed the results of their attempt to use social media and online ads to suppress Republican votes..
..“enrage” Democratic voters to help with turnout, and execute a “false flag” to hurt the campaign of Republican Roy Moore.
“Part of the reason I agreed to speak, and somewhat reluctantly sign the NDA, is I was told by the organizer that I could follow up with any of the people on any of the projects after the meeting.”
Note: There’s more than one “Project”
The report provided to Shane and others at the meeting boasts of the campaign’s effectiveness and positions itself as a serious effort to influence 650,000 Alabama voters. It does not use the word “experiment” to describe the effort.
The #ProjectBirmingham report states that between September and December of 2017 the group “ran a digital messaging operation to influence the outcome of the AL senate race.”
It claims the effort contributed to high Democratic turnout, a drop in Republican turnout, and says that it “drove write-in votes to a number of candidates.” On one page it says its “sustained targeting” of Republican voters “had enormous effect” on turnout.
