1) Let’s blow some myths to pieces. #LáanDreoilín is a Pagan ritual where the wren is celebrated. But along came Christianity. “Quick! We need to abolish all of these Pagan practices and give them our own patriarchal twist,” said Christianity, not feeling at all threatened.
2) Birds hold a special place in Paganism, and in Celtic mythology the wren holds powerful sway. The word "dreoilín" (Irish for "wren") has its roots in the term "draoi éan"/“magical bird”. It was believed the wren acted as a messenger between this world and the next #Dreoilín
3) But Christianity couldn’t bear that. “Let’s conspire to slander this bird so the sheeple will turn against it,” exclaimed Christianity. “We can then spread our own religion.” #Dreoilín
4) Christianity and his patriarchal gang racked their brains before concocting a bullshit story about how the wren betrayed their mate, Stephen #Dreoilín
5) “Let’s make Stephen a Christian martyr,” said the patriarchy. “Now that’s deadly writing,” offered Christianity. And so the story was composed that Stephen, while hiding from his aggressors, was betrayed by the wing beat and the bird song of the wren #Dreoilín
6) Stephen was discovered and executed #Dreoilín
7) And this, a chairde, is the reason the wren was hunted and killed on St. Stephen’s Day. “Up with the kettle and down with the pan/And give us a penny to bury the wran.” This is Christianity’s version. I’d much prefer the real story. The pagan story...
8)...where the #Dreoilín is celebrated. An dreoilín abú! #LáanDreoilín #wransday #Wren #WrensDay
