India, the US, Australia&Canada are all colonial constructs so there is nothing exceptional or illegitimate about Nigeria in that regard. India has been described as a geographical expression. So also Italy. The fact that we are different people isn't as remarkable as we think.
The brilliant video by @falzthebahdguy has a compelling message. His mistake in framing his tweet can be forgiven. One can be more than one thing at the same time. I can be Yoruba/Nupe/Fulani/Ika/Idoma &be Muslim/Christian/atheist & also be Nigerian. There is no contradiction.
Because we live in a world of nation-states, there is a functional hierarchy of identity so there are no Fulani, Igbo or Twi passports. A Fulani from Ghana holds a Ghanaian passport. A Fulani from Nigeria holds a Nigerian passport. A Yoruba from Benin holds a Beninois passport.
All identities are artificial, fluid, dynamic&constantly evolving constructs. 200 years ago, the Hausa, Yoruba& Igbo didn't exist as we know them today. These identities were also colonial-era constructs, products of colonial anthropologists&administrators for their convenience.
5000 years ago, there were no Americans, Russians, Italians, Turks or Singaporeans. No identity is eternal. Ethnic groups aren't more natural or superior to nation-states or vice versa. They are just options/models whose utility depends on changing historical contexts&necessity.
Identities are basically social, cultural&political garments not immutable biological facts. (So there is no such thing as the Yoruba/Igbo/Fulani race). The only biological identity we have is humanity. Thus, you can downplay or emphasise whichever of your identities you like.
"One Nigeria" has historically meant different things to different people. To Azikiwe who coined it, it meant a liberal Republican country of equal citizenship&opportunity. To its later military exponents, it meant totalitarian uniformity&the denial of democratic diversity.
All diverse societies have their internal contradictions&justice issues. To fix ours, we need to promote a common civic identity&solidarity that humanizes&dignifies all of us. With this we can make common cause, fight to entrench true justice&build the country we want to see.
Nigeria is an objective reality. Changing it for the better requires us to own it rather than deny or delegitimize it. We must cast aside pet&petty prejudices that divide&dehumanize us. This is the message of @falzthebahdguy. I endorse it wholeheartedly.
