Reflecting on 2018, it’s been an incredible year in my life & I feel enormously blessed! I honestly feel this is 1st time I’m catching my breath since 2015. I began 2018 committed to healing & finding balance & I’m grateful for the journey this year has been 🙏🏾💕 Some highlights:
I’m honored whenever I’m invited to speak. This year, I was particularly moved to participate in MLK Day Celebration at Ebenezer Baptist at the invitation of @BerniceKing. Also a deep honor to speak at @Yale, @HU_GradSchool & in Charleston for 3 year anniversary of #Emanuel9 2/
Met so many amazing people this year & reconnected w/ many others. Being in Memphis for #MLK50 & convening w/ freedom fighters past & present was an experience I’ll remember always. Meeting civil rights icon Diane Nash & brilliant filmmaker Julie Dash were big highlights 👍🏾👍🏾 3/
I appeared on United Shades of America w/ @WKamauBell discussing confederate monuments & the ongoing struggle for freedom & equality in USA. Among pieces I published this year, it was very cool to be included among great thinkers & writers in @theatlantic's KING special issue 4/
I jumped the broom and feel over the moon! ☺️💕This year I married my very best friend and my favorite accomplice. Thankful not only for my husband but also for his wonderful family that is now my family too. 5/
I caught the Krewe Oshun King beads in New Orleans and carried them with me in my jewelry bag the rest of the year for good luck 😁 6/
Trauma is real & so is healing. Thank you to survivors who shared their stories publicly & helped me not feel alone anymore as I went through my own process. 🙏🏾 One thing I’m proudest of this year is facing trauma, allowing myself to grieve & finding my voice...again☺️🦋 7/
Had a great wedding celebration season that included a girls’ trip to Vegas with friends, a lovely bridal shower thrown for me by family and a honeymoon cruise (my first time seeing the open sea from a boat! 🤯) 8/
Having my mother & grandmother w/ me on my wedding day is priceless. I had friends who lost mothers or had mothers dealing w/ illness this yr. It made me appreciate the presence of my mothers even more, to not take it for granted & made me want to be a better friend & daughter 9/
Dancing with my father. Again, priceless to me and will cherish it forever. 10/
I got to be part of @AnnaDeavereS's brilliant #NotesfromtheField as I was one of the people she portrayed in the play and the subsequent HBO film that debuted this year. Thanks again Anna for inviting me to Charleston to be part of the screening there. 🙏🏾 11/
I’ve greatly enjoyed continuing my community organizing efforts with housing justice advocates in Charlotte this year. I believe in people power & I believe in this collective of committed folks. Looking forward to picking back up on the other side of midnight! 12/
Participating in #FacingRace conference in Detroit this yr was awesome. One of best panels I’ve ever been on (how could it not be w/ these folks?). Also got to co-facilitate w/ @TananariveDue, talk Black horror & Afrofuturism & screen my film w/ audience which is always fun. 13/
Now, I’m closing the year by baking a whole mess of Rumchata cupcakes for a New Year’s Eve house party I’m going to because baking and house parties are two of my favorite pastimes. 💁🏾‍♀️ Tomorrow it’s black-eyed peas, collards and cornbread, of course. 14/
Wishing you all a blessed, safe and #HappyNewYear2019
Speak it into existence, do the work and watch it manifest!
