A cautious case for constitutional optimism: 1/ If you'd said 12 years ago that the Dems would be arguing about a Brandeisian woman, a Debsian socialist, & two progressive candidates of color, you'd have looked like a fantasist.
/ There's a more realistic confrontation with economic power & racialized inequality in the framing & mobilization of national politics than at any time since the 1960s (race) and earlier (economics).
/ It may be a few years before a Green New Deal can be legislated, but there's real hope & energy there--a constructive, progressive response to the climate crisis & the other crises of inequality that are entangled with it.
/ Democrats understand that ballot access & fair elections are an existential issue for them--and the mainstream has understood that quashing these is existential for this GOP. An old false equivalence is gone.
/ There's a more realistic understanding of the Supreme Court's status as an anti-majoritarian political institution, not a transcendent cathedral of principle, than has been in many years.
/ Mobilization is extraordinarily high--and positively motivated around democracy, equality, GND, &c.--not purely reactive, despite the President's extraordinary power to produce reactions & consume attention.
/ Trump's consistently weak popularity shows a certain basic majoritarian resistance to his stratagems. The margin between 40% and 55% is intensely diagnostic of democracy's basic viability.
/ So, to every anxious narrative of constitutional decline, add the reminder that constitutional crisis of certain kinds is part of how democracies renew themselves.
/ And thank all the people whose work has brought us these reason for qualified optimism, often against well-placed naysayers. Thanks, everyone.
