@EMHartsoch A short thread from @modacitylife ’s new book “Building the Cycling City”. Things to think about. (1/6)
#AMS “built on traffic calming rather than bike lanes. Instead of constructing separated cycle tracks on every street…started with speed-limit reductions, parking restrictions, through-traffic limitations, + lane narrowings/removals. (2/6)
Rotterdam was leveled by bombs in 1940 & later re-built with a car-centric focus…until 1970’s: “many Rotterdammers started to realize the reality of the automobile age fell far short of the dream of progress they had been sold.” (p.10) (3/6)
“Thus began 3 decades of reversing the damage done in the name of urban renewal & retrofitting streets…to a more human scale: fast, frequent tramways, widened sidewalks, cycle tracks” (4/6)
“Perhaps more importantly…housing was reintroduced to the city center” via zoning changes. “By building complete streets & complete communities, Rotterdam reversed many of its problems.” (p.11) (5/6)
Dutch cities in need of PR: “when Copenhagen loudly declared that bicycles outnumbered cars on its streets…the milestone was amplified by every major news outlet…but the same was already true in 202 cities across the Netherlands…” (6/6)
