i have... complicated feelings on IGF.

mainly that IGF has established as much of a "brand" for the types of games it features as the AAA awards shows it sought to break away from

to an extent, that brand influences what sort of indie games can be commercially viable/successful
that isn't necessarily an inherently negative thing. there's /so much indie game content/ out there that not attempting any sort of curation is foolhardy.

but i think ppl (and the org itself) still like to see IGF as the definitive "alternative" voice in games. imo, it can't be.
because IGF has so much power re: the visibility it gives games, there's no way we can pretend in good conscience that it represents the indie sphere as a whole. that creates a whole new layer of power dynamics that artists have to play by to get by.
so, i'm not saying IGF is bad, or IGF should change... because it occupies its space perfectly well.

what i'm saying is that how the games world approaches IGF as "the indie game standard" is not healthy for indie games. it's making a statement on what those games ought to be.
