I appreciate @NathanHDize for covering the live tweeting for #AHA19 #s71 #HHaiti

Next up is @DrEricaJohnson, working on the work of priests and other religious figures as intermediaries during the Haitian Revolution — go betweens keeping communication open between the colonial state and insurgents.
#AHA19 #s71 #HHaiti

@DrEricaJohnson is assistant professor of History at Francis Marion University. Her book Philanthropy and Race in the Haitian Revolution is here — if you have a university library, ask them to order!

@DrEricaJohnson I'm struck by the way the priests @DrEricaJohnson is discussing saw their sacred duty — yes, be communicators, but also to condemn rebellion. Saul Alinsky would have some things to about that.

@DrEricaJohnson: Father Boucher (one of these intermediaries) would end up in the inner circle of Sonthonax and people of color, leading the Republic's apparatus in the mid-1790s.

I appreciate this attention to Catholic figures & the way people, Black and white, were thinking about Catholicism in Haiti. For the recent #SHA panel on this very topic (featuring @DrEricaJohnson, @JuliaGaffield & others!) see

Last for this session is Jesús Ruiz, looking at the way the Spanish monarchy may have influenced the thought and actions of Haitian revolutionaries, continuing discussions by Nessler, Yingling, and others. Profile:

Ruiz is digging into the primary sources held in the AGI in Seville, including some fascinating details about battles, the tactics of insurgents, the forms of self-justification for action, etc.
#AHA19 #s71 #HHaiti

Ruiz is providing an important reminder that if we're looking at the 1791 northern plain insurgency, we mustn't stick with just the DXXVc file in French archives (full of claims of (white) French bravery) but also the more critical Spanish view.
#AHA19 #s71 #HHaiti

Ruiz has some intriguing new insight into the historiographic allegations of conspiracy, but as he notes, we should not compound the tactics and rhetoric of the leaders with what the majority of insurgents are thinking/feeling.
#AHA19 #s71 #HHaiti

Ruiz is NOT arguing that white conservatives manipulated the insurgents, but rather that the insurgents used opportunities available to them to push for gains.

Comments from @FictionsofHaiti - Haitian revolutionary studies maturing as a field, less need to justify ourselves, overly contextualize for nonspecialists.
Accidentally broke thread. Continues:

#AHA19 #s7 #HHaiti

I am loving @FictionsofHaiti tearing into the concept of "black Jacobins," using a quote from Christophe tearing into Pétion by linking him to Robespierre AND Bonaparte (not a compliment in that time and place!)
#AHA19 #s71 #HHaiti

I think often about @FictionsofHaiti's questions about narrative, public politics, self-conscious community of people of color, incl women of color in colonial & revolutionary Haiti. Here's a piece I wrote @AgeofRevs about Marie Rose

Books that have come up in the Q&A about communities of Domingois / Haitian women of color in the US after 1804 including Slavery's Metropolis by Rashuna Johnson:

The discussion has now turned to bread & grain. @NathanHDize points out that barrels of flour will also include smuggled weapons & ammo. But also don't neglect the 1789 supply struggles:

Next question is from @chelseastieber, asking about revolution & counter-revolution. @DrEricaJohnson tries to avoid strict categories. I'm reminded of @JuliaGaffield's framing of which/who's revolution. #AHA19 #s71 #HHaiti

@chelseastieber @DrEricaJohnson @JuliaGaffield And @DrEricaJohnson is actively working to disrupt, nuance the conflation of race & revolutionary politics. We have to look at people as individuals - not just race & economics. #AHA19 #s71 #HHaiti
