Despite what a lot of GOP commentators (who definitely know better) say, people who move to a higher tax bracket because their income went home don't take home less pay. Every dollar you earn is more money in your pocket, even if it's less of that dollar.
But while that's not true for changing tax brackets, you know who an income increase can hurt? People who need public assistance for whatever reason. Lot of people on disability for are trapped in a double bind where they can't earn, can't save, can't improve their life.
"Means testing" adds to the expense of administering public assistance, leaves some pretty wide cracks for people to slip through where they can't afford to live but can't get help, and creates perverse incentives that keep people poor and trapped in untenable situations.
A robust safety net where everybody gets what they need is an investment in our shared prosperity and the strength of our economy. Adding bureaucratic barriers and hoops to jump through (means testing, drug testing, work requirements) wastes money and makes it less effective.
