Proponents of touchscreen ballot marking devices sometimes claim w/o basis that voters make more mistakes when hand marking than when using a touchscreen. There are NO studies showing this, new scanners already detect under & over votes (no need for a touchscreen), and... 1/
...the many, many problems involving touchscreen voting systems over the years are almost always attributed to human error! Here is a recent example from the 2018 midterms in Texas. abc13.com/politics/e-vot… 2/
Similarly, Nevada election officials blamed a “combination of human error and tech problems” for the “double voting” that occurred there in the midterms. 3/ reviewjournal.com/news/politics-…
Likewise, in Georgia, “Brian Kemp’s office [said] reports of malfunctioning electronic voter machines changing votes for gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams to votes for Kemp are probably just mistakes being made by voters.” mic.com/articles/19207… 4/
Proponents of touchscreen barcode ballot markers sometimes also claim that the extra security risks and longer lines are worth it bc hand marked paper ballots are too difficult to read in a recount. But... 5/
And the security issues and longer lines that result from universal use of touchscreen systems are significant, as discussed in my @whowhatwhy piece here: whowhatwhy.org/2019/01/02/wil… 7/
More recently, @VerifiedVoting, a well known national election integrity group, cited such security concerns and long lines in its letter recommending that GA forego universal use touchscreen ballot markers in favor of hand marked paper ballots. 8/
As explained in my article and in @VerifiedVoting’s letter, touchscreen ballot marker systems also cost about 3 times as much as using hand marked paper ballots and scanners. 9/
Thus, when election officials like @briankempga and @BradForGASOS pressure the state to buy touchscreen ballot marking devices for all voters, one has to wonder what other factors may be in play. 10/
12/ @briankempga’s vendor of choice, ES&S, was behind the Florida hanging chad fiasco in the 2000 presidential election.
13/ Voting machine vendor ES&S (44% US election equipment) has “donated more than $30k to the Republican State Leadership Council since 2013” & “has installed remote access software in election management systems in 300 jurisdictions...” @NYRDaily #gapol nybooks.com/contributors/j…
14/ ES&S can’t even be trusted to do the right thing w/ hand marked paper ballots & scanners! When supplying those, it likes to stick cellular modems in the scanners, which can then be used to alter vote tallies during transmission to the counties!
