#ShutdownStories
I had a conversation with my sister about the #Shutdown today. I'm recalling this as best I can. I called to tell her about a news alert regarding food stamps. Thanks to the government shutdown, stores can't process any SNAP benefits until it's over.

My sister, who is blind and has a severe mental illness, will be at risk of going without food but she supports Trump and stated that he needs the wall to keep people from taking benefits away from us.

*sigh*

The people who have been laid off are the ones who help stores process SNAP payments. Keeping American citizens fed is a nonessential service. THINK ABOUT THAT. If this shutdown goes any longer, people like her could be in danger of losing her health and food benefits.

His party has also given themselves pay raises during the shutdown.

Me: "Do you think that's fair?"
Sister: "No, but he needs the wall."
Me: " What if he wants to use your benefits to pay for it. Are you ready to give them up?"
Sister: "Maybe."

Sister: "People are coming here illegally from South America. He needs the wall to keep them out."

Me: " But most of the people who are here illegally have overstayed their VISAs. They come to visit or got to school but don't leave. They can't get those benefits anyway.

The people who are coming are escaping from gang violence and civil wars. They apply for asylum. "They stay and see if they get approved. If they don't they [appeal] or leave. They get benefits until they're stable enough to get on their feet."

Sister: "What about the people who speak different languages? I saw a video about someone complaining about a worker speaking with 2 people in a different language. Why can't they speak English?"
7/13
Me: "People who come here need to get around so companies hire people who speak their language to help them until their English is better. I've been around a lot of people who speak different languages and it doesn't bother me. I can even recognize some of them now. " 😃

Sister: "But other countries have walls, why can't we have one?"

Me: "I don't know of any other country that has a wall other than China and that was built thousands of years ago. Building a wall on the southern border is not feasible.

Not only is it expensive, but a lot of people and wildlife will lose their homes. You can't pour cement in the Grand Canyon (I meant Rio Grande) and why isn't he worried about the Canadian border?
10/13
Bottom line is that Trump can't have his wall for these reasons
1) It's not feasible financially or environmentally
2) Army Corps of Engineers says that it's not feasible
2) Ocelot kitties will lose their homes." 😢

Sister: "But Trump once said that he can do a lot with these "great great hands"

Me: "You mean tiny hands! All he does with those tiny hands is tweet and wreck stuff! I wish there was someone who would say, "Put the phone down and put those tiny, tiny hands in the air!"

Our talk ended nicely. I think my sister understood why people are not giving Trump *his* wall. He's willing to hurt everyone to get what *he* wants and expect people like my her to follow him. I hope she will understand that not everything he does is good for everyone.
