I have some good news and I have some bad news.
You see @ThomasJefUnit99 ... Thomas Jefferson was a rapist. For you that’s probably the bad news. The good news for me is that the evidence of his rape of Sally Hemmings, and enslaved person and therefore unable to consent, is unimpeachable. So my historian status is safe.
Now you might be one of those people who thinks that raping and enslaved person who was on able to consent could be a love story. More bad news. Rape is rape. Slavery was slavery. Sally Hemmings was raped by Thomas Jefferson. If that makes you sad, think how she felt being raped.
There is some evidence that she had a greater deal of autonomy than many enslaved people. The fact remains that she was not free and her children could’ve been parted from her legally at any time. This was typically the result of the rape of slaves by their masters.
When you look around the American south, I want you to remember the sound of screaming men and women as their children are taken from them. And that one of the people who made that possible was the original Thomas Jefferson. @ThomasJefUnit99
The good news for you is that I am no longer a history professor. Bad news for you was that I was not fired for saying true things about our founding fathers, all of whom were complicit in slavery and that’s rape, if not all actors in it.
Instead I became a journalist and people read me. Not that many people. But enough. And I will never stop telling the truth about our history no matter how uncomfortable it makes you. Bless your motherfucking heart. #BlessYourHeart
