This isn't just hypocrisy, it's strategy. This is his number one tactical maneuver.

If Trump had just like a simmering, low-level enmity to the news, the networks could turn him down and cite that. But he has an unbelievable, cartoonish antipathy to them.
And because it's harder for reasonable people to wrap their head around his war on the media, it feels less real and thus less substantial. So the reasonable people fool themselves that it can be reasoned away.
So they have more incentive to try to prove him wrong, both because the impact of his antipathy is stronger, and because the apparent chance of proving him wrong seems like it should be higher.
If a guy just doesn't like you, he could work with you and still not like you. So there's no incentive to help him. But if he's got this comically grandiose hatred of you, part of you feels like he'd have to change his tune if you give in. And part of you fears if he doesn't.
As in so many things, what Trump is doing here is taking something the right has done for decades and amping it up to what seems like it should be absurd heights. It's why there's a myth of liberal media bias (which promulgates itself largely through the media repeating it!)
Conservatives discovered long ago that the fear of seeing bias would motivate the media to be biased in their favor, as they bent over backwards to try to convince conservatives to stop the accusations, or make the accusations seem ridiculous.
(Meanwhile, most media being corporate in nature and heavily white and male means that it's fairly conservative to begin with.)
His followers will say "If even the fake news, which HATES HIM, felt the need to air this then that means even they can't deny it."

And the mild moderate middle will just assume if the networks and Trump came together, it can't be that controversial.

Anyway, to make a long story short (TOO LATE!), this is basically negging, amped up to 11. And for Trump, the humiliating factor of is part of the point. He insulted the networks then made a request he knew they would feel powerless to turn down. The cruelty is part of the point.
