/I’ve met Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton; both of them continuously demonstrate a deep sense of responsibility for those living in the US through public service (the polar opposite of Trump). So why doesn’t the media not know how to cover them? Bias and Intent Vs. Impact.
/In the 2016 election coverage the media attempted a 'both sides' approach. The 'intent' was an attempt at equal coverage (Trump's Hollywood access, Hillary's emails), the impact as we’ve seen has been disastrous in regard to public policy that took a backseat to simple slogans.
/The media, still predominately run by men, continue to stumble when attempting to cover accomplished, brilliant, powerful, successful women offering solid policy solutions to very complex problems.
/ (Let me just say the media doesn’t seem to know how to cover women and women of color properly (period) regardless of occupation or accomplishments, but I digress.)
/For the media to properly cover women running for office they’d need to take a moment to think about their unconscious bias towards women, women from marginalized groups, and women in power.
/The media’s treatment of black women, women of color, in office or running for office is:
1. Out of sight
2. Out of mind
3. Or undermine.
/The media would have to reflect on the mistakes they’ve made when covering Hillary Clinton. They have yet to do that.
/We understand that controversy garners clicks, but the media also damages more than half the US population with its misogynistic and racist headlines. Death by a thousand newspaper cuts. (One reason why is right here, media is not very inclusive)
/The media would need to take the time to reflect on just how damaging Trump’s policies have been and discuss them as such. Giving him air time for what will guaranteed be an authoritarian and racist screed is an embarrassment. #BoycottTrumpsAddress
/The media will have to reflect on why it published dozens of “opinion” pieces about a Congresswoman cussing instead of the irreparable damage Trump is causing with his government shutdown.
/The media would actually have to take the time to review and understand the complex policy proposals Kamala Harris (and all women running for office) put forward (if she chooses to run.)
/They never bothered to do this with Hillary Clinton even as she offered solid, brilliant and the nuanced policy. What did we hear about? Her emails.
/The media will need to understand that their pull towards cognitive ease (the desire to water down the complex) is damaging to our political dialogue.
/Just because the media feel its readerships might understand the words “Millionaires and Billionaires”, “Her emails” and “Build that Wall” easier, those aren’t policies, those are slogans.
/The press needs to wade into the deep end of “cognitive strain” where complex ideas and solutions live. We also need the press to realize that by giving oxygen to simplified rally cries and authoritarian slogans they are doing its readers a disservice.
/ Again I’m thankful for The Free Press, but right now the Fourth estate is bowing down to an authoritarian leader in the making who is intent on putting restrictions on their freedom.
/I urge the Free Press to cover potential presidential candidates POLICY and to call out LIES. Policy and the lies are what we want to know about, AND we want you to be aware of your BIAS. I’m rooting for you free press, please don’t let the US down.
