1/ Today reporting from @CNN and @NBCNews indicated both that Rosenstein may leave soon after Barr is confirmed as Attorney General *and* that he wouldn’t leave until Mueller’s investigation was almost done, which suggests that Mueller could wrap up soon.
2/ I have no basis to evaluate the sources relied upon by the reporters.
Assuming they’re right, this means that the investigation could formally end soon but that ongoing court cases would continue. Those cases could generate additional evidence, cooperators, and charges.
3/ I will say, however, that aside from their reporting there is no indication that Mueller’s investigation will end soon. If you put their report aside, there would be no reason to believe that Mueller would wrap up soon (or by any particular date).
4/ If they’re correct, we could see a “report” from Mueller soon. It is not clear it would be a lengthy report detailing evidence collected and making legal conclusions, as many expert. Special Counsel regulations merely call for a confidential report on prosecutorial decisions.
5/ That could be the sort of memo that prosecutors write internally to explain their decisions. The evidence could be revealed mostly in public indictments, with a possible separate report if Mueller concludes that Trump committed crimes but cannot be charged while in office.
6/ I discussed this in more detail with @Mimirocah1 in the #OnTopic podcast that will be released tomorrow (Thursday, January 10th).

The bottom line is that we don’t know exactly what to expect from Mueller. We could receive a short report and much of it could be redacted. /end
