This is a "how it appears to me" thread. The primary thesis can be neither proven nor disproven. The following statement is an opinion:
Most people, whether they call themselves believers or atheists, operate on the underlying belief that humans are special, created apart.
Just as a for instance, I get the impression that both people who eat animals, and people who don't, approach the discussion with the view that we are somehow different from animals.
Some say we're above them and have the right to eat them. Some say we're above them and don't.
We're not special. We're seriously not. We're just part of it all. We evolved here. I've been writing about it a lot recently, because I am afraid that if we don't start acting like we're part of the world, we won't be for long.
Eat and be eaten, except we think we're too good to be eaten. We even poison our corpses so the world can't eat us.
We're really not special. I mean, I think I'm special, and Chica thinks she's special, and Abe thinks he's special, because we are separate units of life.
Every single molecule in my body has been molecules in other living creatures' bodies before. This carbon, this nitrogen, this water - we've been recycling it AS RECOGNIZABLE HUMAN-TYPE CREATURES for over a million years. Alive, dead, consumed, returned, flowing into and out of
This planet, this sacred Earth, this living being which perennially creates and destroys us.
I started as one cell. That cell was made of the living bodies of two humans, who were, as would I be in my journey, walking mud.
The one cell aquired some carbon from planet Earth, and
Became two cells, which in turn aquired some carbon out of the Earth and became four.
And with carbon DIRECTLY OUT OF THE EARTH, previously incarnated as bacteria, plants, animals, undoubtedly over the millions of years through other people, all part of this Earth
Became kidneys and hands and a penis and a brain, and I've had a lot of fun with them, but I'M NOT SEPARATE FROM ANYTHING. It's all the same carbon, the same nitrogen, the same metals and rocks and water. I'm just using it for the time being.
But we can't have this living Earth to become our bodies with the "living" part. I mean, it took life over a billion years to get this planet pre-digested to the point where two cells could stick together and be one unit of life. By themselves, the rocks ain't very edible. For us
We have every right in the world to eat any other creature here, and the creatures here have an equal right to eat us. We're all one thing. What we don't have a right to do, is make another creature extinct.
Because it was here when we evolved.
We're. Not. Special.
Oh, sure, we killed off all the creatures that could eat us, or almost, so now there's 7 andahalf billion of us, or maybe 8 by now.
We mostly did that with antibiotics.
The bugs have just about outlived the antibiotics. Hang on to your hat.
I don't know why anybody needs religion, really. The fact, the story science told us about evolution, nutrition, trace minerals, water, our endless cycle as parts of this sacred Earth through lives and deaths as an endless chain of the elements of our planet - that's enough.
We've had a helluva lot of fun, spending the past hundred years killing off half of everything else alive, all the other possible resting places and experiences for the minerals that make up ourselves, but it's time to knock it off.
We ain't special.
