interesting in terms tracking social justice: friends gf says theres a thing happening in the knitting world (gurl life) where a well known knitter made a post about going to india + its snowballed into SJWs basically rising up in that scene: knitting gamergate, essentially (lol)
this woman, who is apparently “big” in that scene, was talking about how going to India was outside her comfort zone and stuff, and everyone pounced on her talking about her promoting toxic whiteness and a culture of colonialism and stuff.
thought this was interesting as it perfectly followed the formula we all know: people saying they need to make knitting a safe space for poc (LOL) and posting about only supporting knitters of color (not even kidding, she was showing me these posts, dont have pics unfortunately).
fascinating and hilarious to see how social justice can be dropped like a wooden shoe into the gears of any subculture. imagine complaining that the world of instagram and tumblr knitting was permeated by toxic whiteness and needed to be made into a “safe space” just lmao
