Remember that study from yesterday about how seniors are the most likely to fall for fake news? niemanlab.org/2019/01/old-pe…
Well #GoFundTheWall guy has built a network of fake news sites to scam the same people who fall for fake news and used it to build a massive email list to raise money from. Via @BrandyZadrozny & @oneunderscore__ nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news…
He's not the only one doing this. Probably the other most egregious example is Dan Backer, a Republican consultant with impressive fake news to email conversion side hustle. buzzfeednews.com/article/craigs…
Republican campaigns have been building fundraising lists to scam small-dollar donors for years now. They pioneered it with direct mail and then with email. They then rent and sell the lists again and again to all sorts of shady vendors. In perpetuity.
Sign up for any Republican email list. You will eventually get emails selling gold, guns, and these days cryptocurrency and all sorts of crazy scammy products. Campaigns end but candidates (or their consultants) get the list and make money from them for years.
I'm pretty sure several GOP candidates in 2012 and 16 mostly ran to build direct mail and email lists they could exploit for years. Herman Cain being just one example. archive.jsonline.com/watchdog/noqua…
Fake news sites are just the latest addition to the long grift. Networks of lists built and maintained to scam their own base. And for all the supposed innovation of the so-called alt-right, they're basically running the same grift. medium.com/@melissaryan/f…
I'm glad to see these scammers get called out in. I also hope we talk about the ecosystem in a comprehensive way.
And yes, I know some Democratic consultants are heading down this path too. One firm got called out this week but they're not the only ones. *cough* washingtonpost.com/politics/how-a…
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Gah one more thing about #GoFundTheWall guy. @gofundme is finally shutting this scam down and refunding all the money he raised. He'll keep the checks people sent him though. Guess which age demo still sends checks? buzzfeednews.com/article/davidm…
