A friend recently asked me if I was still doing research & teaching, or if I was all social media now.

A word about this.

It’s not about the media. It’s about the work. The tedious, complicated, messy work. A bit of it pops up on social media, but that is not the point of it.
Social media is the window to the work. Twitter is a few minutes of my life each day. The rest of the time is spent doing the stuff that finds its way out to social media occasionally.

People in medicine tend to ask me about social media advice. My best advice is ...
Focus on the work, offline. (If you don’t know what your work is, find it. Out there, not in here.)

In the course of the deep dive into your work, when you come across stuff you’re so excited about you have to talk about it, tweet that.
My favorite follows are people who are clearly deep, deep in their own cave, come up for air with a single tweet / thread, and then descend back into solving their piece of the universe.
(Not dismissing those just here for fun, nor those whose jobs are actually the social media piece. Just addressing the impulse to make the SoMe too much of an end unto itself.)
SoMe is an amplifier. It works best if it amplifies something of substance. 100 x nothing is still ... nothing.
