There is a lot going on here with the @nytimes showing images of the dead in the Nairobi attack. I’ll try to unpack.
1. The outrage in the #SomeoneTellNYtimes is justified. They never would have applied the same editorial standards to an attack that happened in NYC.
2. This cont. the tradition of western media sensationalizing the suffering and death of the non-western world. They would not have done this if it were NYC, because they more closely identify with the suffering of the victims. It would matter to them. #Nairobi does not.
3. The @nytimes exemplies the clicks > quality decision tree deeply embedded in journalism today. They have to have traffic, so they went above the coverage of the other media outlets. They HAD to get your eyeballs on their pics.
4. Make no mistake. The media was all over this story. It was headlined all over the world. However, the rest of the media that covered it (that I saw) did so very carefully, with consideration of security of ongoing ops, and for victims and the families. @nytimes failed to do so
5. I look forward to seeing what the @ImmigrationDept does about the work permits of the @nytimes employees involved in this. They also have a new regional bureau chief that was supposed to get a visa. #Nairobi

8. My guess is that @StateHouseKenya is going to pull the work permit for @kimidefreytas after this stunt. There is going to be holy hell in NBO when they wake up in the AM to see the difference in coverage.
10. Conclude w a personal note: This morning my brother missed a WhatsApp call from his friend and classmate from boarding school. J was sheltering from the gunfire, and was calling his family and close friends to tell them he loved them. J is safe now, thankfully.
11. My bro was shaken by the missed call, and walked out of his classes today without taking his exam. Can you imagine if he had opened up the NYT and seen the body of one of his best friends riddled with bullets? #SomeoneTellNYT to be better.
12. Btw, #SomeoneTellNYtimes that other media outlets don’t have the same low standards. @nytimes Victory for @kot
