THREAD: Uh oh. On the surface this press release looks pretty important.

A group of doctors is speaking out against medically affirming trans kids! But let’s dig in a little bit and find out who these people are and why they might be saying this. drlaidlaw.com/site/gender-sa…
First, the group of concerned doctors counts… 5.

Five doctors signed this letter.

That’s in contrast to the 2,617 scientists who signed this other letter in support of gender identity: not-binary.org/statement/
It’s also in direct contrast to the affirming stance the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the world's leading pediatric body, has taken on trans issues. Their numbers total over 30,000 pediatric physicians. You can find what they have to say here: pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/142/4/…
So, 5 doctors against THOUSANDS, their many peer-reviewed studies and ongoing research into transgender adults and kids.

But should the opinions of these five hold more water than all those other professionals? Who are they, anyway?
Dr. Laidlaw has been an outspoken critic of affirming care for trans youth. This flies in the face of what the world’s leading medical health orgs, a pile of studies, trans kids themselves and the pediatric endocrinologists who work them with say is safest and best.
In 2016, Dr. Van Meter was the vice-president of the American College of Pediatrians (ACP), a designated anti-LGBT hate group of a few hundred (not all doctors).

He cancelled his nearly 4-decades long membership with the AAP due to their pro-LGBT stance. splcenter.org/hatewatch/2016…
There’s not a lot out there on Dr. Hruz, other than being an endocrinologist who speaks out fervently against trans youth.

But from what I can find on him, he’s never treated a patient for gender dysphoria. I’d love to be proven wrong, though, since experience means a lot.
Similarly, it’s difficult to find much of anything on Dr. Wallace – including any work he’s done with transgender youth.

Again, having actual experience with trans tweens and teens is important when making claims about their healthcare. Like, VERY important.
Finally, Dr. Andre Van Mol is strongly *opposed* to banning conversion therapy for LGBT people.

Yes, he wants to keep it around. Which, as we know, has been proven extremely harmful. Here’s his statement on the matter: therapyequality.org/testimony-andr…
Dr. Van Mol has also given testimony opposing affirming care for trans kids, which can be found on this fancy American College of Pediatricians letterhead (you know, the hate group?): therapyequality.org/testimony-dr-a…
And - oh dear, this is awkward - a lot of what these doctors say goes directly against the Endocrine Society, whose AFFIRMING guidelines on treating trans kids and teens can be found here: endocrine.org/guidelines-and…
Hormone suppression and therapy have been used in youth for decades for many reasons. Their effects are well-known.

Are there risks? Yes. Those of us who sign the papers for these treatments know this. But there are far greater risks to NOT affirming trans kids. Like suicide.
Is there more to treating trans youth we still need to figure out? Of course there is. But right now, this is the best way we know to help them, and studies are coming out all the time confirming this.

As affirming parents & medical professionals, we’re doing the right thing.
Being an endocrinologist doesn’t automatically make you an expert on trans youth, as there’s far more to their care than understanding how hormones work.

And being a doctor doesn’t make you immune to bigotry, either. Doctors are human too.
In short, as a parent of a trans teen, I will take the word of thousand of doctors, scientists and – yes – especially trans people, over a group of five.

I’m not convinced my child and I are the ones being mislead by a “dangerous ideology”.
