Okay, let's make this a teaching moment so I can explain why Alex Turnbull's completely random tweet about me is gross and homophobic. I'm going to really break this down:
Let's start with "baby eating" – just a hyperbolic joke, right? Just some edgy banter between mates, so silly!! It's SaTiRe!
Except for as long as LGBTIQ people have been advocating for their rights, conservative and religious opponents have wilfully engineered a moral panic that LGBT people will harm children – that we seek to hurt and convert them.
Professor Gregory M. Herek, whose body of work looks at the history and impact of sexual prejudice, explains where that moral panic around minorities being dangerous to vulnerable people comes from:
And now "pinger poppin'" – the stereotype that LGBTQ people have chosen a hedonistic, party-fuelled lifestyle is pervasive, particularly for gay men. Think about the assumption that our pride parades, parties and clubs are "drug fuelled" and "sexually loose"
When the HIV/AIDS epidemic was wiping out the gay community, the idea gay men were "choosing a party lifestyle" reinforced the idea that they deserved to contract the disease because of their supposed deviance and illegal behaviours.
Gay men were left to suffer while govs delayed intervention bc there was a cultural acceptance "they deserved it".

This stereotype can still act as a barrier to work, housing and healthcare – I've had comments from bosses, agents and doctors all assuming I'm into drugs (I'm not)
"lgbtqi pansexual" is a gag that relies on people thinking it's funny some parts of the queer community like to name their identities. The gag is that "it's an alphabet soup!" and "HA HA i'm a tomato-sexual", as if it's all juvenile and silly.
Identity is really precious to some people, because we've spent our lives being told that we don't or shouldn't exist. For some people, being able to accurately name how they feel is affirming and can signal to the rest of the community who they are. This joke punches down.
Labouring over "L-G-B-T-Q-I-A" as a wordy and complicated acronym was also one of the No Campaign's talking points – the implication is that it's a nonsense hassle. Every speech, interview etc they'd stretch out the letters, pretending to get in a flap. Cool joke, Alex.
Did you know that homophobes saying the Illuminati is behind the "gay agenda" seeking to destroy society and turn people gay is thing? Now you do. It was even weaponised during the survey campaign last year with this cool banner above a Brisbane motorway:

I'm sure Alex was being silly calling me a "lizardsexual" but considering the decades of people likening homosexuality with beastiality, or a slippery slope to marrying animals, it's not really that funny, is it?

Last but not least – why is Alex tagging me in "jokes" about LGBTIQ people at close to 1am? I don't know the guy beyond the fact that he's the ex-PM's son, and his father is no friend of mine and no friend of the LGBTIQ community. Is it because I'm gay? What?
You don't get to be the son of the man who put my community and I up for a terrifying, harmful, completely unnecessary public vote on our lives and then make homophobic gags with me in the comments.

If this is meant to be satire, Alex needs to stop cracking jokes.
Thanks for reading, all. I hope you've learnt something about how words have meanings and how they work to discriminate.

Here's the thread I was tagged in apropos of nothing, if you want to see:
And @alexbhturnbull – I'd welcome an apology and an explanation from you, and if you're genuinely sorry you'll consider making a donation to the LGBTIQ youth service I volunteer at, supporting young people who are bullied for who they are.
