Rollercoaster narrative arc of these social media events is changing too fast. A new issue will exist next week but targeting individuals in the #CovingtonCatholic video is part of a societal problem we see with the Internet & doxing a kid doesn’t educate, it polarizes hate. 1/
Instead, target the root of these conflict problems - why not use balanced guidance & unbiased education to move cultures & ideology closer together, not further apart. These kids are mocking #Indigenous traditional voice - that’s a racist thing to do. 2/
Whatever your view, start with the school sending kids to a ProLife march. You can’t argue that sending 100 young men to attend a rally to dictate how women choose to use their body isn’t inflammatory & structured in a patriarchal view of the world. Things are going to occur. 3/
Having a group of extremists target these students for an hour with racist & homophobic commentary should have been addressed with chaperones or students calling police. Hate speech is hate speech, no matter the race/religion/gender/identity of the person spewing it. 4/
The #IndigenousPersonsMarch occurred at #LincolnMemorial raising awareness to issues of colonialism, rights of Native communities, #StolenLands, #MissingAndMurderedIndigenousWomen & the ignorance of cultural appropriation that exists in North America, especially via mockery. 5/
Elder #NathanPhillips stands for the injustice & impacts that exist in his communities - all rooted in colonialism. 100 young white men, who appear limited in their understanding of #IndigenousPeoples, respond to his drum with chants & tomahawk axe swings? Education is needed. 6/
No matter how much social media evidence exists, the story is muddled with opinion. These MAGA touting youth, are chanting in front of an Indigenous Elder, some mocking, some just making noise. An Elder drums, you show respect, cultural understanding can bridge that ignorance. 7/
The Black Hebrew Israelites are wrong in their speech & rhetoric. Misogyny & hate speech won’t fix the atrocities of the past & they found an easy target in young white men. These kids were wearing MAGA gear, they’re in a political debate just by wearing polarizing messaging. 8/
We can agree that efforts of Elder #NathanPhillips may have been better directed. Don’t move on a crowd of kids, a kid is a product of environment, a “good boy” in his community. In this instance, the kid held his privilege outward towards an Elder. Where were the chaperones? 9/
Asking for the outside world..anyone seen people in MAGA garb, do anything but promote divisiveness & attack marginalized people?

Kids shouldn’t be in the limelight but these kids liked the stage when they casted their moral & political opinion onto others at this event. 10/
Our current reality is what it is. Kids & adults use the Internet to share life online. People were filming & posting to share their experience (positive & negative). What’s important is that we can use this to see how divisive people can be when differences aren’t discussed. 11/
That said, since 2012 there are more than enough references online that students at #CovingtonCatholic believe they can act in a way without impunity - racist, sexist and homophobic content seems to be acceptable in their online sharing. This might be the wake up call needed. END
Just an add on, if people argue this isn't about race, please consider how 100 young white men in Make America Great Again gear, doing a poorly done #Haka, in front of Indigenous persons isn't a problem?
And if you don't know why the #Haka deserves respect (if this is what these kids are appropriating to their school spirit) - have @TheRock explain it.
