Keynote: Personal Branding for the Security Conscious by @Snubs #lca2019
Starting point: everyone has imposter syndrome.
- Take action, practice.
- Surround yourself with awesome individuals.

[List of @Snubs accomplishments, which is too long to type]

- No background in hacking, infosec, Linux...
- Started in theater, did some geocities websites...
- Parents were supportive.

Lesson: everyone starts somewhere. #lca2019
@Snubs College degree: Restaurant & hospitality administration

Not anything to do with computing, but taught a lot about running a business and building a career.

But wanted to mix passions of "building computers" and "theater". Thus hak5 was born. #lca2019
@Snubs Left college in 2008, had a full time bank job (2008 youtube did not pay the bills).

Self educating about infosec was really difficult. TLDR; RTFM SUXX.
- Forums full of egotism/elitism
- No place for beginners to go
- So @Snubs decided to become that missing resource.

@Snubs Job title:
Internet media host and producer
- Influencer
- Brand ambassador
- Educator
Understand the industry
- What do companies need? What are they hiring for?
- How has the industry changed over the years?
- What are the diversity numbers?
- How can you influence #industry in a positive way?

Pick certifications where the number of certified people is equal to or lower than the number of open jobs requiring that cert.

Look at the job titles companies are hiring for.

As of 2017, 11% of people in cybersecurity are women. :(

What do you want to get good at?

Understand the best way to learn.
- Get certificates (if you want them)
- Read books, go to classes, whatever.

Compile a list of your passions.
Compile a list of influencers/thought leaders/speakers/researchers

- Start following people
- Learn from your role models
- You may end up being a thought leader in their eyes

Examples @Snubs follow people in: infosec; youtube; social media strategy; tech

@Snubs Keep learning!
- Block out time every day to learn something on your list.
- Do it every single day.
- Make it habitual/routine.

Building your business
- Build your resume with conviction in mind.

Create a one-pager that you can easily share online, or for introductions etc.

Network at conventions.

Business cards are still important.

Once you are an expert opinion...
- Build your platform with more stuff - speaking, answering Q&A, etc

Use your platform for good
- If possible, offer complimentary sessions or free classes for underrepresented groups.
- Don't undersell yourself - take what you think you're worth and double it.

[ed: yes. always true.]

Personal branding leads to:
- Interviews
- Job advances/positions
- Passive income
- Sponsorship...

Continued building
- What does success look like, now and in the future?
- What or who makes you happy?

Write your vision statement
- Live by it, online and offline.
- Find ways to promote brand.
- What's your brand? Make sure people know it.

Personal branding allows you to
- Identify how to showcase your best self
- Understand your strengths and weaknesses
- Establish credibility
- Solidify your niche
- Convey message and values

Your personal brand is your first product.
Key point: if you don't control and manage your brand, others will do it for you!

Protecting yourself - where do you draw your privacy line?
- Differs from person to person
- Quiz yourself

KonMarie Your Digital Life

Clean up your social media and linkedin. Get rid of old videos.

Smart sharing:
- Be social, while hiding sensitive information
- Barcodes, con badges, flight tickets, keys, addresses

Have a plan for running in to any of these security/privacy issues.

Dealing with targeted harassment
- Keep notes
- Know who to contact
- Trolls: block or ban them if you can, else troll back (not recommended, but possible).

Why enable youtube comments?
- Rather have troll waste energy on me than new people.

Your accomplishments speak for themselves. #lca2019
Why do it? Because I enjoy it. Do things you love.
