I can’t be the only Jewish person on here feeling absolutely broken by the rising levels of antisemitism & the utter lack of support from wider society, especially those who call themselves anti-racist. I feel gaslit, exhausted & frightened. This isn’t a game & it won’t end well.
I think in all the din, a lot of people forget that the underlying factor here is Jews wanting reassurance that they are safe, understood & valued. We’re not trying to win a goddamn argument here. We’re not trying to be right. This hostile, sneering environment is terrifying.
I’m completely overwhelmed by all the wonderful people speaking up in these replies & quote tweets. Doing my best to get back to as many people as possible. It’s amazing & heartening to know that there are people quietly watching & shaking their heads #belouder
A few issues have come up repeatedly which I’ll address here. “It’s no antisemitic to criticise Israel”. No. It is AS to criticise Israel using age-old racist tropes, to suggest the Jews who live there should be eradicated, to use a Nazi analogy when any other analogy would do...
...to be antisemitic towards Jews using AS tropes but replace the word “Jew” with “Zio”, to demand Jews speak out about Israel before they may speak on anything else (especially antisemitism), to collectively blame Jews for the actions of a foreign gvt & to blame Israel for AS.
Next: “How can I be a better ally? Can you send me more info?” I’m working on a comprehensive resource but I also have a busy job & limited time. The first thing you can do is visit rationalwiki & familiarise yourself. Do as much in-depth research about antisemitism...
...the history of it & its contemporary mutations as you can. If you see a Jewish person object to an antisemitic trope, look it up instead of challenging the Jewish person. We’re all so tired. Do the work of educating yourself so we don’t have to do it for you.
Once you feel confident in your knowledge, #belouder . It’s great to know we’re quietly supported - it’d be even more encouraging to be loudly supported. Challenge your friends. Clean your own backyard. Everyone should be taking care of their own patch before they point elsewhere
If you want to be an ally, stop asking me for examples of antisemitism. I not a search engine. Start by doing the learning above, then have a scan through my mentions if you’re that genuinely keen for working examples. If you’re asking in bad faith, just piss off.
And for the love of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or whatever deity you prefer, stop saying “I’ve never seen any antisemitism”, as if it proves a point about the goodness of humanity. It either means you’re not Jewish & you’re unaffected or you can’t recognise it effectively.
Basically stop aiming your confusion at Jews as if we have something to answer for. I don’t blame people for their lack of awareness but I sure as hell am not responsible for plugging the gaps. If I took it upon myself to educate everyone asking, I’d be here 24 hours a day.
