Another intimate partner violence homicide of a fellow physician, Sara Hawley, a family and preventive medicine resident kutv.com/news/local/uni…

Physicians screen for partner violence. But we forget to ask the peers we work with, our friends, colleagues, trainees.
Why? We don't like to think we are as susceptible to health risks as our patients. We assume docs will "fix themselves" out of unsafe situations. And we have not overgrown the awkwardness around asking a friend or colleague, "Are you okay? Are you safe in your relationship?"
People close to me have suffered through abusive relationships while I worked with them shoulder to shoulder. I have lectured to physicians about IPV screening, and failed to ask people I love, "Are you okay? Is that relationship going well? Are you safe?"
In the coming days we will hear more about Dr. Hawley and have a chance to celebrate her life and mourn what was lost to her loved ones and to all of medicine. In the meantime, we can all reach out and ask a friend, a sister, a cousin, a colleague: "Are you safe?"...
And take the moment to remind them you are there to support them if they ever need it.

**None of this is to suggest I have a clue about what could have prevented Dr. Hawley's death. Just thinking how we can tighten the net of support around each other going forward.💔
