As cities across the country try to save lives and shelter the homeless this weekend during the #PolarVortex, can we please talk about how homelessness is a policy failure?
There has been EXTENSIVE research about the best way to fight homelessness.

The research TELLS US how to solve it!

It's an approach called "Housing First."

You don't wait for someone to get sober before you get them a place to stay.

You don't wait for them to get a job.

You house them FIRST.

No preconditions, no barriers to entry.

This is what the RESEARCH tells us.

One thing the Federal Government COULD and SHOULD do to fight homelessness is invest in public and affordable housing.

That's not what Trump and Ben Carson have done. They ZEROED OUT funding for public housing in their budget proposal.
But the problem pre-dates Trump.

We have TIED OUR OWN HANDS in this country since 1998.

Something called the "Faircloth Cap" prevents us from building any new public housing above the number of units that existed in 1999.

1999!

The guy who came up with the Faircloth cap is perhaps most famous for arguing that unwed teenage moms shouldn't get welfare.

A real stand-up guy!

His name is Launch Faircloth. And we should Launch his Faircloth Cap into space. 🚀

Luckily, Congresswoman @MaxineWaters has a bill to #AbolishFaircloth!

It's called the Public Housing Tenant Protection and Reinvestment Act.

This bill fully funds public housing, and makes it so desperately-needed repairs can FINALLY be made.

People living in unaffordable cities like New York are so desperate for housing, the wait lists exceed the number of units available.

In NYC, there are more than 209,180 families on the waiting list for 175,636 units of public housing.

This is a CRISIS

The first step in addressing a crisis is getting rid of artificial limits that tie our hands.

We have to #AbolishFaircloth.

It's long past-time to tear up this Clinton-era restriction.

Here's my full pitch. I hope you read it: truthout.org/articles/dont-…
