1/7 Here’s a sad little tale for future social historians of #Brexit, if they haven’t been hunted down & eaten by then.

Once upon a time, I worked for an amazing company which, thanks to its liberal attitudes & fair share of profits, built a unique bond between all its workers.
2/7 It was so special that, long after it was sold, asset stripped & went bust a group of us, representing management to warehouse & now good friends, still meets regularly for a ruby to catch up on families, discuss our ailments & reminisce about how lucky we were to work there.
3/7 We never, ever speak about politics.

Until last night.

Just when I thought we’d got away with it Person 1 said,

“So what do we think about Brexit & #TheresaMay?”

came an instant, ferocious reply from Person 2.
4/7 Person 1: “WELL I DO!”

Person 2, white with fury: “IF YOU DO, I’M WALKING OUT NOW!”

“OK let’s just leave it in the box with religion & salaries,” said I, knowing them both to be good, kind people & close friends for decades.
5/7 Cue nervous laughter, awkward changes of subject, the solemn division of the bill, coats & scarves on & off we went into the night.

How desperately I wish we could return to a past land where politics stayed in Westminster & it didn’t matter to most of us who was in charge!
6/7 But we can’t &, although this was more handbags than pistols at dawn, it was further sad, depressing evidence of how damaging & divisive #Brexit is becoming & that, however it plays out, its ugly, baleful presence will be with us now for the rest of our lives.
7/7 PS It being a school night, we weren’t even pissed, which is even more depressing. 😬😬
