This is treated as crazy, but honestly government shutdowns are a thoroughly modern phenomenon, and it seems that GOP intransigence is responsible for all of them since Newt Gingrich.
People who think government is evil are very bad at running it and often resort to hostage-taking because they cannot successfully argue the merits of their policies without a threat imposed for denying them.
Republicans continue to initiate shutdowns because they do not think government does anything useful, because they don’t care about the people hurt by it (they think those people are stupid/weak for “depending on the govt), and they’re never punished.
Even after this horrific shutdown that permanently affected the lives of many federal workers and contractors and the people depending on them, the focus went right back to the political circus. Voters aren’t reminded of how painful this was and the GOP is fine with that.
This the third shutdown in only two years of the Trump Admin and yet this is hardly mentioned as part of the narrative of Republican politics even though they had full control of the 3 checkpoints for 2 of the 3. Insane.
Until we successfully acknowledge the problem that leads to these frequent and prolonged shutdowns and the painful effects on the country, we are never going to fix the issues with why our government doesn’t govern well.
