My mentions are a dumpster fire, but I’m pretty sure someone in good faith asked why decrim not legalizing sex work.

It’s a super nuanced and complicated topic but I’m gonna sum up in very tweets.

So TLDR
Legalizing means the government has control over regulations. Which doesn’t seem bad on its own, but then consider how most laws are ableist, racist, sexist af

The idea that the government on any level- local, state, fed controls the industry is a problem
This may mean sex workers can only work in one area, so SWs who can’t afford to get there are still in violation.

SWs must be tested for stds on a certain schedule. But then SWs without adequate healthcare are in violation.

SWs have to buy permits that the poor can’t afford
This may ban outdoor sex work, but ignore that regulations will prevent some sex workers from ever being able to access indoor employment.

It may legalize brothels but ignore not all sex workers can be employed there, esp if they have criminal records.
Essentially, legalizing makes it legal for those who can afford to be legal.

Everyone else, read most marginalized, wont be able to meet the legal criteria and will be criminalized and end up with charges and in jail. Nothing changed for them.

We can do better.
Maybe immigrant workers won’t qualify for legal status. So they’ll get deported if caught

Or disabled workers will be denied jobs

There’s just too many loopholes and ways for it to go wrong tbh.

So decrim. Not legalizing
There’s dozens more examples, but I said short thread
