1] Dear World,
Tonight my heart has broken. As I look through the Twitterverse, I can smell the hated, see the seething self righteousnessof people who no longer have any compassion, dignity, moral compass or love for any human being.
2] The political turmoil in every country around the world is at a fever pitch. Left Vs Right, every shred of common sense, decency and respect afforded to us has been thrown out the widow.
To take a break from the insane world I was viewing, I took a step away & went inside...
3] I went to check on my sleeping boys to ensure they were okay....then it hit me...& it hit me like a sucker punch to the gut. What sort of world were my boys going to inherit, how could they possibly survive the onslaught of everyone telling them what they should be....
4] How they should act, what they can and can’t say, who they should hate, how they can afford to live, why the dreams we are helping them build now will probably be left as a tattered remnants of broken promises from a hopeful father. I wilted...I cried...
5] I just stood there and one of my boys must have sensed me standing there silently and then groggily said,”Dad...I love you “ and reached out his arms towards me.
I knelt next to his bed and have him the biggest hug I could fathom....
6] He asked me,”Why are you crying Dad?”
I didn’t know what to say....I knew he wouldn’t understand the ways of the world outside these 4 walls and I wanted everything I had seen outside these 4 walls for as long as possible...
7] Then I heard the most beautiful words from a 6 year old child, my child, my boy...”Dad, don’t cry. I love you, my brother loves you and Mummy loves you. Don’t ever feel sad, I will look after you, I will always make you smile, and I will always be here.”
8] My heart imploded with love for my son. The sheer simplicity of his words gave me hope that we are raising our boys the right way. Full of love, hope, compassion, joy, dreams, sharing, community and faith. What more could I want....
9] What could I want indeed? Simple, I want the world to be more like my 6 year old boy. The wisest, most caring, compassionate, loving soul you could ever ask for.
My son put me to shame tonight. He had the courage to speak the truth when I could not....
10] He had the voice of reason, honesty and truth that I did not. He hugged me one last time, laid down again and said “Sweet Dreams Dad”, then rolled over to go to sleep once again.
I have never felt so proud in my life. I have never felt so humbled either..
11] So here I am again, sitting on the back deck, looking at the Twitterverse and I ask you this. Are you like my son? Would your parents be proud of the person you have become? Are YOU proud of the person you have become?
12] Take a minute. Think about it....
Then be like my son. Hug someone, thank someone, tell someone they ARE worth being loved. For just a moment, I challenge you to forget the hatred, stop shouting and remember what it was once like to dream, or have you forgotten how too?
13] Remember, at heart, we are one species, we need each other and it took a six year old to remind me to never be afraid to be kind. My six year old acted like he was sixty years old, while I sit here & watch ‘adults’ act like 6 year olds....
14] I know who’s advice I’ll be taking tonight....
And for the record, I am going to have the Sweetest of Dreams....
