#ElRobot for @whoismrrobot S1e04, Daemons. The first virtuoso showpiece episode.
The opening does everything it needs to before dropping the title card over a black backdrop so it can drop the card as a surprise. Sharp trick.
The treatment of addiction is pretty strong. The narration overdoes it but the character work is strong.
The messianic tone of compulsion is a good note to hit.
Romero is great. Steals every scene.
The cut to Angela is perfectly timed. It's not clear to me whether the withdrawal sequences or the four women are the best part. (It's the women.)
Though as the trip starts it's very good. The mocking of television hacking is a great start.
Darlene and Trenton is so strong. Trenton is such a great choice to include.
Darlene and Angela are actually my favorite part of this show. And this episode is where they really establish themselves as co-leads.
The long take as we enter the hallucination is decadent in all the right ways.
This is also the show's first real lingering exploration of paranoia.
The turn to nightmare, the violence breaking out in the background as we get an uncomfortable makeout, is so so stylish.
And then that in turn to dreamscape. It's the equal of Hannibal. The throw to commercial break is great.
I assume there was a commercial break there.
It's a pity they hadn't hired young Angela yet for this.
This show makes great use of fish.
Like consistently.
This just stays weird for so long. It's outrageously confident.
Esmail has digested Lynch better than most.
The show makes good use of how jacked Rami Malek is.
I am a menace to society!
Using the dream sequence to set up the strangeness of the Dark Army is such a strong baseline of technical competence.
Shayla and Angela is cheap but if works.
Darlene and Cisco are great.
And then Elliot's alienation from when the show is about the women. God this episode is 10/10.
Ok. That's it for tonight. More tomorrow probably.
