There is a distinct difference between 'informational' #writing and 'informed' writing. We teach 'informational' writing in our schools and, too often, receive correctly-structured and perfectly-cited bullshit. Students regurgitate main ideas and details, often word-for-word,

and, in fact, show very little understanding of what they've read. This is especially prevalent in social studies. We teachers often encourage this because we emphasize organization and feel so proud when our students can correctly write in MLA format.

'Informed' writing, on the other hand, demonstrates voice, POV, synthesis of different ideas. Its purpose may be the same as informational writing, but it is infinitely more effective because the reader believes that the writer a) understands the content; and b) gives a shit.

A great teacher told me the main requirement for good writing is to 'have skin in the game'. I couldn't agree more. #Teachers, push your students to write with purpose and voice, and for authentic audiences. @biblioracle @cultofpedagogy #edchat
