Ok time to have "The Talk" again.

I just had a follower demand to know why I dont' follow back.

Simple.

When you cross about 25,000 followers, following back everybody who follows use is a useless gesture and here's why: Your follower TL will move far too fast to read.
By the time you get to 75,000 followers that TL will be running by so fast trying to pick out and read a tweet before it goes sailing by is next to impossible.

I only follow 6,300 people and that follower TL is next to impossible to read because it's too fast moving.
So I adopted a policy that other people with huge follower counts have adopted.

Follows are earned, you have to say something to earn a follow.

And following back 112,000 people would be a useless gesture, and kinda dishonest, if you think about it.
"Holy crap! Brian Cates followed me! He's reading my tweets!"

Well....not really.....
I do go over the responses my Tweets get, and several times a week I see somebody say something impressive and they earn a follow.

Most of my time on Twitter though is spent reading THIS list: Must Follows.

About 200 of the most informative accounts.

I *like* hundreds of tweets a day. I do read many of the responses my tweets get.

I appreciate people who follow me and I do my best to make it worth their while, to spend some of their time reading my stuff.

But demanding followbacks = not a good idea.
