In this thread we will look at some data related to the socio-economic condition of Muslims in India. I will tag this thread with keywords so you may find this thread easily in the future.

In this study Muslim OBCs are clubbed with other OBCs. The 'Muslim' column has the data for Muslims who are in the open category. As the study shows, overall the economic ranking of Muslims in India is closer to avg and at par with OBCs.

For the purpose of addressing historical socio-economic disparties the Govt of India divides the population in 4 major groups. I have highlighted the data for Muslims.
As it can be seen from the data presented in the above tweet, there are two major classifications among Muslims, OBC and Others and around 1% ST and SC. In the following tweets we will look at the socioeconomic disparity between these groups of Muslims.
If we look at the total population of Dalits in India then Dalit Muslims make less than 1% of the Dalit population. The population share of Dalit Muslims (Pasmanda) among Muslims is around 1%.
If any political party is demanding reservations for Pasmanda Muslims then they are talking about 1% of the Muslim population, A meaningful reservation would mean reclassification of certain Muslim OBCs into SC. As it is said, the devil is in the details.
99% of the Muslim population in India is divided into two major groups. OBCs and Others. Now let us look at the socio-economic dispartity between these two groups. As you can see from the dataset, there is not much to set them apart. OBCs doing better than Others in some cases.
Let us see the socio-economic disparity between different groups of minorities. As you can see other minorities have a bigger dispartity between their groups but Muslims irrespective of what group they belong to are almost equally disadvantaged. This is an important distinction.
Again to highlight the same point, there is another chart which is even more telling. Here we are seeing the Over/Under Representation among the poorest in urban India. There is not much to set apart various Muslim groups but look at the disparity among other minorities.
There is an argument that many groups of 'Dalit Muslims' have been classified as Muslim OBCs instead of SCs. This argument has merit in my opinion. Even then we have seen that socio-economic disparity between OBCs and Others among Muslims is remarkably limited.
Now look at another study based on a different source of data. This study was conducted using the two rounds of the Indian Human Development Survey (IHDS) of 2004-05 and 2011-12, in four regions north, east, west, and south, each region being represented by two states.
This study has been carried out by Christophe Jaffrelot, professor of Indian Politics and Sociology at King's India Institute and Kalaiyarasan who is a faculty at Institute for Studies in Industrial Development, New Delhi.

In their study the researchers treated different groups among Muslims as one block because there was not much to set them apart. As we have already seen from a mountain of evidence presented in this thread.
The same researchers have also found that Muslims overall are facing a decline on the socio-econonomic ladder. This is not because of caste divisions among Muslims, this is because of the persecution and injustice they are facing due to majoritarianism.
To end this thread, let us go back to this dataset of Wealth,Income and Consumption Mean Values-IHDS 2011. As you can see there is a huge socio-economic differential between Hindu castes while Muslim OBC and Others are nearly at parity. Caste is least dominant among Muslims.
