Last night I was speaking to grad students at Columbia Journalism School about how vulnerable journalists are in this current environment. While I was speaking this was going down in Texas. huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-t…
We talked about #LearntoCode and the NPC meme. How media companies have had to increase security for their staff but also how recently laid off journalists and freelancers don't get and protection at all.
What I tried to emphasize to the students, a mix of folks in media and tech, is that we're all vulnerable. And we don't talk about vulnerability enough. Living with the threat of violence -- digital and physical -- does a number on you.
Trump and his supporters know this too. They count on it. But instead of viewing his actions as a societal problem that should be socially unacceptable, many well-meaning people dismiss it as partisan political theater. It isn't.
On a more positive note the students were fantastic and asked engaged questions that we could really dig into. And it's always a treat to hear my co-lecturer for the evening @selectedwisdom speak. Thanks so much @justinhendrix & co for inviting me.
