Fiona McPhail, Principal Solicitor @shelterScotland, kicks off housing law panel. Shout out to @RebLawSco: there is a movement among lawyers & future lawyers to start using the law more as a tool for social change. #JusticeEdinburgh
McPhail: Scotland has established strong housing rights - but how are they accessed when we regularly see so many people on the street? #JusticeEdinburgh
McPhail tells the personal story of representing someone facing eviction. She had walked for 2 hours in the rain as she couldn’t afford the train. She’d had problems with benefits. They had no electricity & had little food. It’s a story that has been repeated. #JusticeEdinburgh
McPhail sharing the human stories of the housing crisis. A women sleeping in her car. Folk arriving home to locked doors. Reductions in social security punishing the vulnerable, & facing a choice between eating or paying the rent. #JusticeEdinburgh
McPhail: people come to our legal services at a point of crisis & from a position of vulnerability. Our role is to empathise, to represent, & to challenge authorities on their behalf. #JusticeEsinburgh
McPhail:Legal advisors can not solve the wider problems of poverty & economic breakdown alone. The response must be organised on a cross-disciplinary basis. #JusticeEdinburgh
McPhail: Knowledge is power. We need people to know their rights. EU nationals had been told they didn’t have rights to homeless accommodation - they did. Legal advice ensured access to justice. #JusticeEdinburgh
McPhail: The Tory Home Office was seeking to deport homeless EU nationals. Legal challenges, housing lawyers, immigration lawyers came together to overturned an illegal xenophobic policy. #JusticeEdinburgh
McPhail: Last summer we were given a weekend’s notice for a mass eviction of 300 asylum seekers in Glasgow by Serco. A huge legal & charitable response was coordinated to get people legal help who needed it. #JusticeEdinburgh
McPhail: As a legal community we need to support each to make changes happen. #JusticeEdinburgh
