.@DrNikLaw, Law Lecturer, there is a lack of flexibility in studying law in Scotland - in terms of what is taught & how you can access those courses. #JusticeEdinburgh
.@DrNikLaw: When studying there was a sneering attitude to human rights in practice in Scotland. That has now been transformed for the better, but there is still a struggle to enforce human rights law. #JusticeEdinburgh
.@DrNikLaw: Of things I teach no subject has a largergulf between our rights in law & what happens in practice than housing law. Homelessness is a failure of law: the law should not allow homelessness to happen. It is an obligation that no one should be homeless #JusticeEdinburgh
.@DrNikLaw: The legal community should constantly ask itself every day: why are people still homeless when there is supposed to be legal rights to accommodation? #JusticeEdinburgh
.@DrNikLaw: There are centuries of Scots law that on paper give us rights. Eg ‘wind & water tight’ housing ‘fit for human inhabitation’. The problem is the enforcement (or lack there of) of these rights. #JusticeEdinburgh
.@DrNikLaw: We must question what subjects are given a priority in Scots Law schools. There is a problem with required subjects - they exclude employment, housing, welfare law at the expense of subjects which prioritise a commercial focus. #JusticeEdinburgh
.@DrNikLaw: the exclusion of these subjects means the legal profession is less focused on these areas, that those who become the judiciary have had less experience in these important areas. #JusticeEdinburgh
